Loaf Position

Relaxed but alert, ready to move

Tension
Relaxed

Interpretation

LAll four paws tucked neatly under the body, forming a tidy bread loaf shape. This is the cat's classic “standby mode” — relaxed yet alert. The cat can spring up quickly, unlike a curled sleeping position. The loaf usually means the cat feels safe but isn't fully asleep. It may be observing, waiting, or just zoning out. If the tail is also tucked in, it's more relaxed; if the tail is draped outside, there's a hint of alertness.

How to respond

You can speak softly or slowly approach, but don't suddenly pick it up.
