Belly Trap

Defensive attack posture, overstimulation

Tension
Alert

Interpretation

BThe cat rolls over showing its belly, but when you reach for it, it grabs your hand with all four paws and bites+kicks (bunny kicks). This differs from relaxed belly-up — this posture is defensive: the cat aims its most powerful weapons (hind claws + teeth) at you, with the belly as bait. Common in overstimulated cats from too much petting, or cats getting too excited during play. Learning to tell “belly invitation” from “belly trap” is essential for cat owners.

How to respond

Stop touching, slowly withdraw your hand — don't pull hard (worse injuries). Give it time to cool down.
