Head Bunting

Marking you as “mine”, deep affection, greeting

Interpretation

HThe cat rubs its forehead, cheeks, or chin against your legs, hands, or face with real force. The head has multiple scent glands — forehead, cheek, and chin glands — and rubbing transfers the cat's scent onto you, declaring “This human is mine.” This isn't possessiveness but intimacy — cats only bunt their family. After bunting, you carry the cat's scent, and other cats will know you're “taken.”

How to respond

Gently scratch its chin and cheeks with your fingers — a cat's favorite reciprocation.
