Interpretation
PAll the fur on the tail stands on end like a bottle brush. This is an involuntary stress response — the arrector muscles contract to make the cat look bigger and more intimidating. The cat may also arch its back and turn sideways toward the threat. It's not attacking — it's saying “Stay back, I'm dangerous.” Give it time to calm down; the fur usually settles in a few minutes.
How to respond
Avoid direct eye contact, slowly back away, give it an escape route, wait for it to calm down.
