Interpretation
WEyes wide open to maximum, sclera possibly visible (third eyelid showing), pupils maximally dilated. This isn't ordinary surprise — the cat is terrified to the limit. Common during sudden loud noises (thunder, breaking objects), predator encounters, or being touched unexpectedly. The cat is in extreme stress, and normal behavior patterns may be completely disrupted.
How to respond
Stop all movement immediately. Let it hide — don't chase or try to comfort it.
