Direct Stare

Challenge, threat, or hyper-focus

Tension
Alert

Interpretation

DThe cat locks eyes with you or another animal, fully open and unblinking. In feline social rules, sustained staring is a challenge — meaning “I'm watching you and haven't decided what to do yet.” But if the pupils are normal and the body is relaxed, it may simply be focused observation (like waiting for food). Key distinction: stiff body + stare = threat; tail quiver + stare = anticipation.

How to respond

Avoid sustained eye contact. Slowly look away or soft-blink to signal peace.
