Yawning

Relaxing, de-stressing, or genuinely sleepy

Tension
Relaxed

Interpretation

YMouth wide open, eyes squeezed shut, possibly accompanied by a full-body stretch. Cat yawns have multiple meanings: when just waking up, genuine sleepiness; during tense situations, a “calming signal” telling itself and others “Relax, there's no danger”; during a cat standoff, one yawning is signaling submission. So if your cat yawns in the vet's waiting room, it may not be calm — it may be trying to calm itself down.

How to respond

If a relaxed yawn, join in the laziness; if a stressed yawn, provide reassurance.
