Tail Swish

Irritation, indecision, focused attention

Tension
Alert

Interpretation

The whole tail swings side to side from the base like a pendulum. This signal is nuanced — the cat may be conflicted (wants to play but doesn't want to be bothered) or growing impatient. Key indicator: slow swish = thinking, fast swish = getting annoyed. If you're petting a cat and it starts swishing its tail, it's time to stop.

How to respond

Slow down or stop, give it space, and watch if it approaches you on its own.
